Safaricom Women in Business
Betty Gichuki

My name is Betty Gichuki, cofounder and Business Development Director at Create A Tee, an ecommerce business that enables customers to self design, order and sell custom printed apparel online. We specialize in custom t-shirts, hoodies, sweatshirts, polo shirts, tote bags and other cotton apparel. To us a t-shirt (and other apparel we work with) are not just pieces of cloth sewn together; but an extension of the wearer’s personality. It communicates his ideology whereby thoughts and views can be summed up into the form of an image or words.

Create A Tee is moving away from the brick-and-motor way of doing the t-shirt business. This is by offering online solutions to individuals, groups, organizations and t-shirt entrepreneurs that enable them come up with customized apparel on demand, all at the convenience of their own spaces.

I have worked in the corporate world for about 20 years and through this experience got to appreciate the important of having efficient systems and processes in organizations. This is one of the things that I bring to Create A Tee so that we don’t only compare ourselves with our next door neighbor, but also borrow from best practices from around the globe. Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility (CSR) is in my DNA and this has greatly influenced the way we do business at Create A Tee. Because of this we are deliberate the way we balance the 3 Ps – people (society around us) planet (environment) and profit (the income we attain).

I am looking to working with Safaricom more, and expanding Create A Tee. The uptake of ecommerce has been growing steadily in the recent past, and we want to take advantage of this by growing our market in Kenya and beyond.
